Our Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Here at La Finca de Hamberto, our dedication to sustainable agriculture and farming isn’t just about growing food; it’s about building a better future.

We’re committed to working with nature, not against it.

We cultivate more than food; we cultivate a resilient future, nurturing land and empowering our community.

Sustainable Agriculture and Farming Isn't a Trend.
It's a Necessity.

Why is sustainability such a central point to La Finca de Hamberto’s mission? As a farm in a remote community like Vieques, we face the reality of importing 99% of our food and goods. This reliance makes our food system vulnerable. We believe farming in Puerto Rico can be a powerful force for good, actively enhancing the environment and the community.

For us, sustainable agriculture and farming means building a self-sufficient system that reduces dependence on external resources and strengthens the local food supply. Since 2018, La Finca de Hamberto has been a living model for sustainable food systems, fostering human health, energy independence, and ecological biodiversity. We prove that sustainable agriculture and farming practices are not just viable, but essential for a thriving future for Vieques.

Our Initiatives in Action

At La Finca de Hamberto, sustainability is an active, daily practice of closing loops and regenerating resources.

We view our farm as a living laboratory where waste becomes fuel, sunlight powers production, and every element supports the whole. By integrating circular economics with innovative technology, we are engineering a resilient blueprint for island food sovereignty.

We believe in transparent agriculture— reach out to learn more about our methods, technology, and results.

We believe "waste" is simply a resource in disguise. Our food waste diversion programs exemplify this. We partner with restaurants in Vieques to collect food scraps that would otherwise go to landfills. These scraps, along with our farm waste, become nutrient-rich compost or feed for our chickens, pigs, sheep, and goats. It’s a powerful symbiosis. We even send produce out and get food scraps and seeds (or pineapple crowns) back for propagation – a true win-win for La Finca and our organic produce restaurant supply partners.

We follow EPA guidelines on waste reduction for many of our projects, not just seed propagation. We also convert discarded food into warm meals for the community, value-added food products, and shelf stable canned goods. Our composting transforms animal manure and plant matter into incredibly fertile soil, actively building soil health and supporting regenerative farming. We also extensively reuse wooden pallets from imported goods, repurposing them for pastures, sheds, and tables.

An exciting, developing part of our circular system is biogas. We're troubleshooting a system to capture methane from animal manure (currently pig manure) for clean energy. Our vision includes using this biogas for cooking, potentially powering a pizza oven. While still in development, it underscores our commitment to maximizing resource utilization and energy independence within our circular economy

Given frequent power outages and high energy costs on Vieques, renewable energy is vital for our resilience. We embrace agrivoltaics, integrating agriculture with solar energy production, embodying climate smart agriculture.

We have two pioneering agrivoltaics projects. Solar panels are installed over trees grown in containers, providing shade while generating electricity. Another system is in our cow field, where panels shade animals, and grazing cows manage foliage below, increasing efficiency. This isn't just about clean energy; it's smart, multi-functional land use benefiting energy needs, plant propagation, and animal welfare – a hallmark of sustainable agriculture and farming techniques.

We've integrated a solar-powered refrigerator to guarantee produce quality during outages. Our goal is to expand this significantly, powering multiple freezers and refrigerators entirely with 100% solar and hydrogen power. This commitment demonstrates what's possible for rural development and energy independence in remote communities, making us a truly sustainable farm

Our produce is grown with deep respect for the land and our consumers. We are committed to organic farming methods, abstaining from synthetic pesticides or artificial inputs. Every fruit and vegetable from our fields prioritizes health, nutrition, and sustainability.

We have earned our USDA certified organic status, validating our adherence to USDA organic standards. This certification confirms our practices and builds consumer confidence in the benefits of organic produce. Our focus on organic farming for sustainable agriculture and farming is fundamental to our sustainable food system.

Our farm is also home to a diverse food forest, a living seed bank embodying ecological biodiversity and restoration agriculture.

We love our pollinator friends! Bees, bats, butterflies, and other beneficial species are vital for our harvests. Creating a vibrant, pollinator-friendly environment is a central pillar of organic farming and environmental sustainability.

We intersperse wildflowers and cultivate pollinator gardens throughout our fields. These provide essential habitat and food sources for creatures crucial to our farm's production.

Our beekeeping efforts further support thriving bee populations, contributing to pollination and honey production. This dedication to biodiversity in agriculture contributes to the wider ecological health of Vieques.

Healthy, vibrant soil is the bedrock of sustainable agriculture and farming. We prioritize practices that build and enhance soil health. Our composting program returns organic matter and nutrients to the soil. We also implement crop rotation and cover cropping, which enrich the soil, prevent erosion, and naturally suppress pests.

A pivotal element for future expansion is silvopasture, integrating trees, forage, and livestock. By practicing rotational grazing with our goats, we ensure even manure distribution, fertilizing pastures and building soil organic matter while preventing overgrazing. Our "living fence" also contributes to soil stability.

These practices, combined with our commitment to regenerative farms, build living soil that supports robust plant growth, enhances carbon sequestration, and cultivates a healthy ecosystem, moving beyond the goal to simply restore agricultural land to actively regenerating it.

Measuring Our Impact: Beyond the Harvest

We believe in transparency and the power of data. Beyond the metrics, our impact is felt in our community. Our fresh produce, available at the Vieques farmers’ market and in local restaurants in Vieques, brings healthy, local food to our neighbors.

Our farm also serves as a processing hub, converting hundreds of pounds of discarded food into value-added and shelf-stable products. This reduces waste and enhances island food supply resiliency. We’ve received countless positive remarks about our farm to table Puerto Rico offerings.
