At La Finca de Hamberto, we’re building more than a farm; we’re cultivating a resilient future for Vieques, Puerto Rico, through sustainable agriculture and farming.
Our work impacts everything from local food security and economic development to environmental restoration. We believe that by investing in sustainable farming practices, you’re investing directly in the well-being of our community and the health of our planet. Your support, whether through donations, grants, or partnerships, empowers us to continue our vital mission.
Vieques is a small island, home to under 9,000 residents, where over 50% live below the federal poverty line. This makes our community rural, persistent poverty, and critically underserved. Despite earning significantly less, the average Vieques resident pays equal, if not higher, costs for fresh produce than the average American. This disparity stems from an extreme dependence on imports: 99% of Vieques’ food comes from mainland Puerto Rico, which itself imports over 85% of its food. This fragile supply chain, relying on a single, often unreliable cargo vessel, frequently leads to nutritionally deficient, expired, or damaged goods, resulting in significant food waste.
Beyond food, Vieques faces environmental challenges. As a frontline community to tropical storms and hurricanes, our island suffered significant deforestation during the 1800s, further exacerbated by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Years of US Navy munitions testing also impacted agriculturally productive lands, with ongoing cleanup through burning. This combination of factors, alongside observed climate shifts– like worsening droughts, floods, rising sea levels, and warming temperatures– makes our work in climate-smart agriculture and restoration agriculture profoundly urgent.
Your support directly addresses these critical vulnerabilities. By strengthening local food production in Vieques, we reduce dependence on external resources, improve food quality, and build a more resilient, self-sufficient community. We’re actively working to increase food farming and sustainability in a place that desperately needs it.
Our "Energizing Rural Communities" solar/hydrogen project is paving the way for complete energy independence, reducing reliance on Vieques' unreliable power grid and high energy burden. This is key for our cold storage, ensuring fresh produce for the Vieques farmers' market and local restaurants in Vieques.
Thanks to our donors, we are proving that sustainable farming isn’t just a theory—it’s a working model that feeds and powers Vieques.
We've rescued over 25,000 pounds of usable excess from the landfill since 2018 through our circular economy initiatives with local Vieques island restaurants, and prevented nearly 30 metric tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere
Thanks to support from RAFI and FruitGuys, we've established vital hoop houses, allowing us to experiment with diverse growing styles and expand our production of specialty crops like arugula, mustard, radish, bok choy, and tomatoes for farm to table Puerto Rico deliveries.
A private investor helped us build crucial cattle fencing, improving our regenerative farming practices and animal welfare.
Operating under USDA's 2501 (underserved and veteran farmers) and AGVETS (veteran farmers) programs, we've become an agricultural incubator. Our workshops have provided hands-on learning, demonstrating sustainable farming techniques and helping other Puerto Rican farmers get started.
Your contribution, no matter the size, makes a direct and meaningful difference in our mission to cultivate resilience, food security, and environmental health on Vieques.
We invite corporations who share our commitment to sustainability, community development, and food security to explore corporate sponsorship opportunities. Partnering with La Finca de Hamberto offers a unique way to demonstrate your corporate social responsibility, align with sustainable farming practices, and make a tangible difference in a vibrant, underserved community. We offer custom sponsorship packages that can align with your specific ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) goals, providing visibility and engagement opportunities with a pioneering sustainable farm in Puerto Rico.
Beyond funding, we thrive on collaborative partnerships. We are always seeking to expand our network with organizations, academic institutions, and individuals passionate about sustainable food systems, regenerative agriculture, and rural development. Whether it’s through research, technical assistance, or joint outreach efforts, we believe in the power of collaboration to amplify our impact. Our strong relationships with local restaurant produce supply networks and the Vieques farmers’ market are a testament to successful community partnerships.
Grant funding is instrumental in allowing us to implement larger, transformative projects that address systemic challenges and build long-term sustainability. We have a proven track record of successful grant documentation and project execution, operating under programs like USDA’s 2501 (underserved farmer support), AGVETS (veteran farmers), and CFP (Community Food Projects), which previously funded food processing at the Community Kitchen.
Your support plays a vital role in helping us expand our impact and strengthen food security in Vieques. Your contributions directly support our efforts to provide fresh, healthy food to our community, offer educational opportunities, and implement innovative sustainable farming methods.
