Community Support

True food security is a circle, not a line. We are closing the loop by connecting the food we waste to the food we eat, ensuring that nothing is lost and everyone is fed.

Food Scrap Program

You know that feeling when you toss out food scraps? We do too, and we’re turning that waste into a valuable resource! Our Food Scrap Program is a cornerstone of our circular economy efforts. In 2024, we collected just under seven thousand pounds of food waste, transforming it into vital nutrients for our animals and enriching our compost. Restaurant scraps are a feast for our chickens, ducks, and geese, providing a diverse and protein-rich diet. Fruits and vegetables from supermarkets are carefully evaluated – if they’re still good, they become human food or we harvest their seeds. Anything unfit for consumption, like rotten onions or avocados, gets added to our on-farm compost piles, building the incredible soil that nourishes our crops. While our current system effectively manages our farm’s needs, we’re exploring partnerships with Isla Nena Composta to scale up. This is a prime example of sustainable farming techniques in action.

Community Kitchen

Food is love, and the Community Kitchen is a testament to that. In supporting COREFI with the Comida Caliente program, we’re combating food insecurity by processing farm-fresh produce and rescued food into warm, nutritious meals for Vieques’ most vulnerable communities.

In 2024, we proudly distributed a remarkable 30,470 meals, each averaging 1-2 pounds of wholesome goodness.
Our goals for the coming year are ambitious: integrate more local food, establish routine recipes for consistency, boost the efficiency of meal production and delivery, and empower our kitchen staff with greater involvement in food processing and value added specialty crops. Think food recovery from local supermarkets, freezing large quantities of fruits and roots post-harvest, and preparing large batches of delicious, value-added items during farmer workshops.

Closing the Hunger Gap

Turning Surplus into Strength

We look at a bin of ‘scraps’ and see soil. We look at ‘rescued’ produce and see a hot dinner. These programs prove that with the right effort, we can transform what the industrial system leaves behind into the nourishment our island needs to thrive.
